A question

What is heavier?

A kilo of cotton or a kilo of steel?

The answer as you would’ve guessed is that both have the same weight.

Now imagine carrying a 7 kg sack of potatoes versus carrying a 4-5 month old baby (average 7 kgs). They should both feel equal right? Wrong. No seriously, why does carrying the baby feel soooo much more easier and carrying potatoes of the same weight feel like drudgery? I usually get the whole “its your baby” argument, but I don’t fully buy it, because not all mothers are Nirupa Roys you know.

  1. the same reason as to why a dead person is heavier to carry than a live person,of the same weight!!Because when you hold a baby, you somehow carry it in such a way that the weight is evenly distributed- the way, you would place its arm etc, legs astride the side of your waist
I KNOW I AM NOT MAKING SENSE.

hmm.. i think you have a point. but then even if you carry your potatoes in a backpack and your baby in one of those backpack type baby carriers, it still isn’t the same.

  2. Psst, why is everyone asking you about sarees? am i missing something?

Its a long story. I thought I had deleted and buried some old posts from past life but the comments lingered on and showed up as ghost comments at unexpected places. Shit I just said ghost. Now how am I going to sleep?

And since you brought it up, I decided to stop being lazy and actually went and fixed it!! *Poof and they don’t exist!

  3. one word :LOVE!! unless you love your potatoes more than your baby! :-)

arre.. dont go the “you love your baby” route. everyone is giving that explanation. your original line of thought has hope. and since you’ve asked, the baby would win over the potatoes, only by a small margin! :)

At some point this whole thing changes – like, when your baby becomes around 30 pounds and you have to lug her around on your back.. you wonder, I backpacked with that weight on my back and climbed up a hill – why cant I carry this little devil on my back around the grocery store?

Is it? Right now I am happily judging those poor couples who carry their children in prams. Let me see how long till I have to eat my words and get one of those pram things myself.

And you climbed up a hill! and that too with a 30 pound backpack?? Take a bow woman!!

I guess that it is because the kids have their limbs dangling and support their own head. Have you noticed how heavy the baby gets once it falls asleep. Also, I made an interesting observation last week. I visited some friends, their baby is just 7 months old, and already weighs 10 kgs, the same as my 20 month old daughter. But I really had a tough time holding him, probably coz he is smaller in size, and hence the weight is much more concentrated, the same as with potatoes!

I kinda see what you’re saying. Does it mean that if a human – who can support his head and limbs obviously sits on a donkey, its better for the donkey compared to a sack of lifeless stuff? This is turning out interesting.. :)

Oh and thanks for dropping by. Do keep coming back.
