1 onion, finely chopped
1 tomato, finely chopped
A few springs of coriander leaves, finely chopped

Yo! Today it’s gulab jamun time, my favouritest dessert of all times. One of the best gulab jamuns I’ve had was from a famous shop in the narrow streets of Jaisalmer, where I had gone on a “study tour” from college. They were huge, and cost a whopping 10 Rs per piece (this was more [...]

Ghughra is one of the traditional mithai prepared during Diwali in Gujarat/Maharashtra. Different versions of ghughra are pretty popular with various names all over the country. Kopra and khoya are two popular stuffings. I prepared the one that is common at home – with kopra stuffing. This version stays fresh for longer and I associate [...]

Aloo parathas are our favourites for weekends. It is a stand alone dish, which means it doesn’t necessarily need much accompaniments. Aloo parathas can be eaten by themselves or with some curd or pickle or mint chutney.
For years I have been in love with my mother’s aloo parathas where she used to add raw masala [...]

I’ve been down with a terrible cold and headache since the last couple of days. After two horrible days of the attacks on Mumbai, I wanted to do something normal, bring some normalcy back in life – to do something other than constantly checking on the situation at Mumbai.
So this is what I did. I [...]

Today is Vakbaras and the Diwali marathon has officially kicked off in my kitchen! Since I favour farsaan (namkeen/karam whatever) over mithai just a little bit, the first one in the Diwali series is a farsaan – fried chana dal.
I’ll let the picture do the rest of the talking and give you the recipe. The source [...]

When people say “Ooh I love my veggies” when the only “veggies” (how I hate that word) they’re eating is onions and tomatoes, it just makes me want to thrust a brinjal or two in their face. I hate brinjals, btw. Nothing against onions or tomatoes, I too use them quite a bit, but in [...]

The milk delivery system in our house works thus. We have prepaid coupons that we buy before hand from the doodhwala. Every night (or early morning) we hang a bag outside the door with the milk coupons. Jitni zaroorat utne coupons! And poof! the milk bags appear magically in the morning.
The system works fine and [...]

In a typical Gujarati meal, this sweetish daal with a tangy touch is my favourite. There was a time when I found the daal very boring and tried every trick to avoid eating it at home. Like all brats do. Then hostel life happened. And the perspective of home food changed completely. I used to [...]
